Encounter in the shallow water

Today I will write about a fishing trip that took place at the end of September 2025. I simply do not like getting up early in the morning, so this time I packed my equipment the day before, charged my 2 x DJI Osmo Action 4 camera and at 9h first I went to a nearby cafe and had a coffee, two 😉 At 13h I was at the microlocation that always gave me nice catches, and that happened this time too. The terrain is sandy, with fine grass on the bottom, there is rarely any shelter. First I went a little further from the shore, and made dives with waiting technique at depths of 3 to 5m, but there was nothing to appear. As I already wrote, this does not interfere with my hunting, because I know that everything changes in a second. I persistently make dives of up to cca 50 seconds in duration, but nothing appears. After an hour and a half I decide to go even shallower, right next to the end. Also, I’m diving parallel to the shore, and my back is almost sticking out of the sea 🙂 Suddenly, big mullets start to appear in floks, and I catch 3 nice ones. Autumn has begun, it’s September, I knew there would be some mullets, I expected them, only this time they were right next to the shore,in really shallow water. Why? Because some predator chased them there….
And then, encounter happend, I was lying on the bottom, 1.2 m deep, and looking straight ahead, when suddenly I feel something coming from the depths and I see two shadows, one of which is really big! I slowly turn the speargun, and I see a huge Bluefish calmly passing by me and looking at me curiously. I fire the harpoon from my NeoCarbone 100 speargun, I hit it in the middle, behind the lateral fin, and the fish starts to run away. The reel buzzes again, the fish gets tired after a while and it’s finally in my hands!
The scales later showed 6.5kg and that’s my biggest Bluefish so far!
It is a relatively new species in the Adriatic Sea, quite aggressive towards other fish and reproduces and grows quickly.
I caught the first specimen back in 2003, behind city of Omiš and I didn’t even know what kind of fish it was, I never saw it before. It was only the next day that I found in the professional literature that it was a Bluefish.

Me and Bluefish 6.5kg

I bled the fish right in the sea, and after the hunt I cleaned it and put it in a cooler box with ice. When I got home in evening time, I was tired so I just cut the fish in half and put it in the fridge. The next day I filleted it and removed the skin, vacuumed into bags and put in the freezer, so it can be defrosted and prepared as desired. Bon appetit !!

Here is a full video in 4K resolution of that situation in really shallow water. Enjoy!!
